Florida Gulf Coast University – New Campus

Project Description:

The new Florida Gulf Coast University Campus is located in Fort Myers, Florida for THE BOARD OF REGENTS & STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM. It is the 10th new campus to join the State University System. The project, although new, provided its own unique challenges. The new campus, totaling 250,000 s.f., consisted of seven (7) new buildings, hard scape, parking and main entrance road. The scope of work included, (commencing at 9 o’clock on the site photo and moving clockwise) the Library / Administration Building, Academic Building #2, Academic Building #1, Student Services Building #2, Student Services #1, the Wellness Center and (off the picture to the south) the Central Energy Plant.

Project Challenge:

Environmental Issues:
Mitigation of fresh water wetlands, FEMA flood zone.

The project was faced with coordination and concessions with various government agencies for wetland mitigation, flood plain restrictions and available access to the proposed site. Since the site was mostly under water significant amounts of fill were incorporated for the site pad.

The focus of the design and educational goals for the campus was the capability of integrating the latest technology into the learning process as well as the utilization of “long distant learning” through the campus’ own Web site, network access and Broadcast Building.
